The Color Purple Tickets:

The Color Purple is a musical about love. It is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The creative team includes Marsha Norman (Book), Brenda Russell (Composer and Lyricist), Allee Willis (Composer and Lyricist), Stephen Bray (Composer and Lyricist), Gary Griffin (Director), Donald Byrd (Choreographer), John Lee Beatty (Set Design) and Paul Tazewell (Costume Designer).

This is an inspiring family saga that tells the story of Celie who was separated from her children and sister, Nettie, and married off to Mister, a husband who treats her cruelly. When the strong-willed Sofia and the tender Shug enter her life, Celie learns to love and take care of herself. Thus the story leads to the healing power of love and a celebration of life.

The music score includes jazz, ragtime, gospel, and blues. The musical features 29 songs, including Huckleberry Pie/Mysterious Ways, Our Prayer, African Homeland and The Color Purple (Reprise). On January 24, 2006, the Audio CD The Color Purple (2005 Original Broadway Cast) was released. In 2007 it received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Show Album.

The production premiered on Broadway at the Broadway Theatre on December 1, 2005. It closed on February 24, 2008, after 30 previews and 910 regular performances. The original Broadway production received several awards - 2006 Theatre World Award for Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, 2006 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (LaChanze), 2007 Theatre World Award for Fantasia Barrino.

The Color Purple kicked off its first nationwide tour on April 17, 2007, at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. In 2008 the production received multiple NAACP Theatre Awards - Best Lead Female - Equity (Jeanette Bayardelle), Best Supporting Male - Equity (Rufus Bonds, Jr.) and Best Costumes - Equity (Paul Tazewell). A second national tour opened on March 12, 2010, at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, Maryland.
