Swan Lake Tickets:

Swan Lake is one of the greatest classical ballets in the music history. It had been composed from 1875 to 1876 by the Russian composer of the Romantic era Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The plot follows the story of one true love, numerous obstacles and dark curses. While hunting, Prince Siegfried sees an amazing swan, which suddenly turns into a beautiful woman - Odette. She tells the prince that she is a princess, but because of the spell of an evil warlock, during the day must be a swan and at night is allowed to be a human again. The spell can only be broken if a virgin prince swears eternal fidelity to her. Prince Siegfried falls madly in love with Odette, but through a spell by the evil warlock, he accidentally proposes to another woman, believing that the woman is really Odette. Princess Odette decides to commit suicide and throws herself into the lake. The Prince follows her and at the end the two are transformed into lovers in the afterlife. Throughout the decades many different endings exist, ranging from romantic to tragic.

This classical ballet has had many and different stage interpretations. Currently most of the productions are based on the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for their St. Petersburg performance of 1895. In the nineteenth century the Russian choreographer Lev Ivanovich Ivanov was highly appreciated professional and was responsible for two of the world's best loved ballets: Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Marius Petipa had an enormous influence on Russian ballet as a director of the Russian Imperial Ballet for over 50 years.

The San Francisco Opera Ballet performed the first American full-length production in 1940. The artistic director Willam Christensen created the production. The principal ballerina of this entirely American production was Celina Cummings.
