La Cage Aux Folles is a fascinating musical comedy with French name and international fame. The musical is based on a French play that was written by Jean Poiret in 1973. Ten years later, the musical was composed by Jerry Herman, with a book by Harvey Fierstein.

The Broadway premier of La Cage Aux Folles was in 1983 at Palace Theatre. David Mitchell directed it. The original cast performed 1,761 shows and included the actors Gene Barry, George Hearn, Walter Charles, Jay Garner, Brian Kelly, Merle Louise, Elizabeth Parrish, Leslie Stevens, William Thomas, Jr., John Weiner. The premier was followed by two Broadway revivals, one in 2004 at Marquis Theatre with 229 performances and in 2010 at Longacre Theatre with 433 performances by the end of 2011.

The story tells a tale about a homosexual couple, Georges and Albin, who are threatened when Georges' son announces his engagement to the daughter of a right-wing politician, who wants to close down the local colorful nightlife! With a visit from the prospective in-laws imminent, they all decide to take drastic action to hide their lifestyle. But it occurs to be a very difficult task. This is one terrific musical with an important message of tolerance and love.

In 1986 La Cage Aux Folles had its West End premiere at the London Palladium, and a revival in 2008.

The production released three cast recordings - the Original Broadway cast, the Original Australian cast and the 2010 Broadway revival cast. The records include between 13 and 15 songs. Some of them are: With you on my Arm, Look Over There, La Cage Aux Folles and the best and most powerful song I Am What I Am, which has become an anthem for the gay and transgender persons.

Throughout the years La Cage Aux Folles received 11 Tony awards - six in 1984, two in 2004, and three in 2010.
