Billy Elliot is one of the most celebrated and award-winning musicals which became extremely popular in 2009. The show is based on the drama film Billy Elliot, released in 2000. As the film's screenplay, and the book and the lyrics of the musical are written by Lee Hall. The huge popularity of the show is due to the fact that Sir Elton John composed the music. The creative team also includes Stephen Daldry (Director), Peter Darling (Choreographer), Ian MacNeil (Set Designer) and David Chase (Music Director).
Billy Elliot is set in the tumultuous years of 1984-1985. The story tells of one young boy's triumph against the odds. Living in a small English town, Billy stumbles out of his boxing practice and, as the only boy in a ballet class, becomes attracted to the grace of the dance. He discovers a surprising talent for dance that inspires his family and his whole community, and changes his life forever after being accepted as a student at London's Royal Ballet.
The musical premiered in 2005 at the West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre London, UK. Most critics praised it. The original London cast released a CD recording featuring a bonus disc with Elton John covering The Letter, Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher and Electricity.
The Broadway production opened at the Imperial Theatre in 2008. The cast of Billy Elliot celebrated the show's third anniversary on Broadway on November 15, 2011. After 40 previews and 1,304 regular performances, the show closed on January 8, 2012.
Billy Elliot has been awarded 81 national and international awards including ten Tony Awards, Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle.
The writer Lee Hall founded the so called Billy Youth Theatre. This project gave the opportunity to schools and youth groups from England, Scotland and Wales to stage their own production of the musical. Unfortunately, it was announced that the producers of Billy Elliot would not be extending Billy Youth Theatre into the 2011-2012 season.
