South Pacific Tickets:
South Pacific is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. The music is composed by Richard Rodgers, the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan.
The story draws from Tales of the South Pacific (1947), James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize winning book with short stories about World War II. The musical combines characters and elements from several of its stories into a single plotline.
Nellie, a nurse on a Pacific Island during the World War II, falls in love with Emile de Becque, a local planter. Emile is also in love with Nellie, and each wonders if the other reciprocates his/her feelings. However, when she learns he is a widower with two half-caste children, she cannot accept the situation. Then U.S. Marine Lieutenant Joseph Cable arrives on the island from Guadalcanal, having been sent to take part in a dangerous spy mission whose success could turn the tide of the war against Japan.
Cable falls in love with a Polynesian girl named Liat. Cable and de Bacque go off together on a spy mission and the two women wait in hope of their return. When they come back, Emile is glad to see that Nellie has overcome her prejudices and has fallen in love with his children.
The premier of the musical was in 1949 at the Shubert Theatre in New Heaven, Connecticut. Then the show moved to Boston. An American tour ran for five years in 118 cities, from 1950 through 1955. South Pacific opened on Broadway on April 7, 1949, at the Majestic Theatre. The production moved to the Broadway Theatre in June 1953.
The production won ten Tony Awards; for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Libretto, Best Director and all four acting awards.
South Pacific inspired a 1958 film adaptation and has enjoyed numerous successful revivals, including Broadway revivals in 1955 and 2008, and West End revivals in 1988 and 2001.
