Les Miserables is a musical based on the novel by the same name written by the French author Victor Hugo. The lyrics are by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, the music is composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with English-language libretto by Herbert Kretzmer.
The musical Les Miserables is produced by Cameron Macintosh, who is one of the most famous producers with more musicals than anyone else, including the three longest running musicals of all time - The Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Les Miserables.
The first presentation of the musical was in 1980 at Le Palais de Sports in Paris, France. Since then, Les Miserables has been translated into 21 different languages and productions have played in 41 countries and 291 cities. The original London production was released in 1985 at Barbican Arts Centre. In December 1985, the show moved to London's Palace Theatre where it ran for 18 years, transferring to the Queen's Theatre in April 2004. 2010 marked the 25th anniversary year for the incredible musical in London.
The musical premiered on Broadway on 12 March 1987 at the Broadway Theatre. The show moved to the Imperial Theatre in 1990. After 6,680 performances in sixteen years, the musical Les Miserables closed on 18 May 2003. The Broadway revival of the show was in 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre and for the next two years the production released 496 performances.
The musical tells the story for the social and political struggles of nineteenth century France. Inspector Javert, a stern lawman, spends years hunting down Jean Valjean, a man who stole bread to feed his family and succeeds to escaps jail. Valjean rescues an impoverished orphan girl and joins a group of student revolutionaries in 19th century France but spends his life trying to find redemption.
Throughout the years Les Miserables has won over 70 major theatre awards.
