Memphis The Musical Tickets:
Memphis The Musical is the most award-winning musical of the 2009-2010 season. The music and some of the lyrics are composed and written by David Bryan - famous keyboard player and founding member of Bon Jovi. The book and lyrics are by Joe DiPietro.
This musical is inspired by the life of Dewey Phillips - one of the first DJs who dared to play black music in 1950s. The story brings the audience around the underground dance clubs, where a white radio DJ wants to change the world and struggles for the forbidden love with a beautiful lady - a black club singer. This musical is an extraordinary mix of explosive dancing and irresistible songs.
Memphis was staged for the first time in 2003 at North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts, and at TheatreWorks in Mountain View, California. The show opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre on October 19, 2009, and became a total hit. The musical received four 2010 Tony Awards - Best Musical, Best Book (Joe DiPietro), Best Score (Joe DiPietro and David Bryan) and Best Orchestrations (Daryl Waters and David Bryan). The show also received four Drama Desk Awards and four Outer Critics Circle Awards.
In 2010, the audio CD Memphis: A New Musical (Original Cast Recording) was released. The record included 19 songs and a bonus track, an acoustic version of The Music of My Soul with piano and vocals by David Bryan.
The Broadway production was filmed for a high definition exhibition in digital cinemas during spring 2011. The film was titled Memphis: Direct from Broadway and was recorded during regular scheduled performances at Shubert Theatre. A Blu-ray edition of the musical will be released on January 24, 2012.
In 2011 the production started a USA Tour - From Broadway to Your Backyard. The first show was at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee in October 2011.
