Mamma Mia! is a musical, written by the British dramatist Catherine Johnson. The musical is based on the band ABBA's songs and also is composed by the former members of the Swedish pop group Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. It includes the hits Super Trouper, Lay All Your Love On Me, Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Take a Chance On Me, Thank You for the Music, Money, Money, Money, The Winner Takes It All, Voulez Vous and SOS.
The story unfolds on a beautiful Greek island. Days before her marriage, Sophie Sheridan starts to look for her real father to walk her down the aisle. In her mother's diary discovers the names of three men and sends each an invitation to her wedding by the name of her mother - Donna Sheridan. Of course, Sophie's three possible fathers arrive: Sam - an American architect; Harry - a British banker; Bill - a Swedish writer and adventurer. After many events and vicissitudes, Sophie agrees that it does not matter which one of them is her biological parent, as she loves all three and they are all happy to be "one-third of a father". Suddenly, Sophie decides that she is not ready to get married and her fiancé Sky agrees with her about not getting married. In the end, Sam and Donna are married and the young couple departs on a round-the-world tour.
The musical originally opened in London, in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999. Mamma Mia! was transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The musical opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001. Today spectacle is played also in Denmark, China, Japan, Brazil, Korea, France and Italy. Mamma Mia! has a North American tour, Spanish Tour, South African Tour, Japanese Tour, Korean Tour and International Tour.
Catherine Johnson has written the screenplay for the Mamma Mia! movie, released in 2008. Meryl Streep stars as Donna, Amanda Seyfried as Sophie and Pierce Brosnan as Sam.
