Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre is a dance company founded in New York in 1958 by Alvin Ailey. The great American choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey stayed forever in the world history by popularizing modern dance including African-American participation in the contemporary concert dance. The artist aimed to create a multi-racial dance organization and to give opportunities to black dancers, frequently excluded from performances by racist attitudes in 1950s and 1960s. But above all, throughout the years his company has presented the most talented artists, regardless of their race. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was recognized by United States Congressional resolution as a vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World.
 
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre has performed for over 23 million people in 71 countries on 6 continents, representing the African-American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition. In his lifetime Ailey created 79 modern ballets for his unique dancers. Some of the most famous performances are the show programs Revelations, Night Creature, Cry, The River, etc. The company continues his vision by performing important works from the past and commissioning new additions to the repertoire. Before his death in 1989, Alvin Ailey designated Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. In July 2011, Ms Jamison passed the mantle to Robert Battle.
 
Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation is the umbrella organization that supports all of the activities and dance initiatives. Today the foundation includes:
- Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre;
- Ailey II - a second performing company of young dancers and emerging choreographers;
- The Ailey School - one of the world's most extensive dance training programs;
- Ailey Arts in Education & Community Programs - organization, which bring dance into classrooms and communities;
- The Ailey Extension - offering dance and fitness classes to the public.
