Shen Yun Performing Arts is an American entertainment company that produces classical Chinese dance and musical performances. The company presents one colorful and exhilarating show. Ancient legends and modern stories of courage are brought to life by over a dozen dances and songs. In the beginning, the shows were titled Chinese Spectacular, Holiday Wonders, Chinese New Year Splendor, and Divine Performing Arts. Now the company performs under its own name Shen Yun.
The Shen Yun troupe was formed in 2006. The show represents the culture of China, the country and 5,000 years of traditions. This is a performance of yearning, enchanted dreams, and the classic battle between good and evil.
The show consists of mini-drama pieces drawn upon stories and legends that span China's history from the Yellow Emperor and through the Tang and Song dynasties to modern days. This is one magical trip through the centuries. The choreography includes grand imperial processions to legions of thunderous drums. The costumes are colorful, luscious and rather exotic for the western culture. The audience is captured by a variety of visual effects within battlefields, passive landscapes and majestic palaces. Every year, Shen Yun unveils an entirely new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores.
Shen Yun's performances are based on classical Chinese dance with China's numerous ethnic and folk dance styles. A Shen Yun performance consists of a collection of group dances programs and 3 to 4 solo vocal or instrumental performances. Each dance number has its own theme, its own story, and its own ethnic, regional, time or dynastic background.
The Shen Yun orchestra performs original compositions. The music combines classical Western and Chinese instruments in a unique way.
In 2011, Shen Yun performed in more than 100 cities across 20 countries worldwide. Since December 2011, Shen Yun's three equally large companies began the 2011 World Tour. The three companies will travel until May of next year, simultaneously performing in cities across North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia.
