Mary Poppins is a musical based on the series of children's books by P. L. Travers and the Disney 1964 film. It is produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Group - the stage play and musical production arm of The Walt Disney Company.
The creative team includes Richard M. Sherman & Robert B. Sherman (Original Music and Lyrics), Julian Fellowes (Book), George Stiles (New songs, Additional music, Dance and Vocal Arrangements), Anthony Drewe (New songs and Additional Lyrics), Richard Eyre (Director), Matthew Bourne (Co-director and Choreographer), Stephen Mear (Co-Choreographer) and Bob Crowley (Scenic and Costume Design). Currently two casts are formed - The New York Cast and Touring Cast.
The story tells for the magical English nanny, Mary Poppins. She is blown by the East wind to Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane (London) and into the Banks' household to care for their children. Encounters with chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and various adventures follow until they all turn the family's world upside down. The musical features the irresistible story and unforgettable songs from one of the most popular Disney films of all time, plus brand-new breathtaking dance numbers and spectacular stagecraft. Mary Poppins is a long two hours and forty-five minutes, including one intermission.
The original West End production was staged in 2004. The musical premiered on September 15, 2004, at the Bristol Hippodrome and moved to the Prince Edward Theatre on December 15, 2004. The production closed in January 2008. The musical was a total hit in London in 2005, when received the Evening Standard Award for Best Designer (Bob Crowley), and two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical (Laura Michelle Kelly) and for Best Theatre Choreographer (Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear).
The Broadway premier was on November 16, 2006, at the New Amsterdam Theatre. In 2007 the musical won two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Gavin Lee) and for Outstanding Set Design (Bob Crowley). The same year received seven Tony Award nominations and won for Best Scenic Design (Bob Crowley).
