The Addams Family is a musical comedy that completes the circle of numerous adaptations of these strange and creepy characters, created by Charles Addams in his single-panel gag cartoons. The creative team of the musical includes Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who have written the book. Andrew Lippa composes the unforgettable songs. Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott are the original directors and designers, with choreography by Sergio Trujillo.
The Addams Family features an original love story that turns into Wednesday Addams parent's nightmare. That little girl has suddenly become a young woman and has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. Her parents are terrified by the fact that their princess of darkness has a normal boyfriend. For Gomez and Morticia this is a shocking development that turns the Addams house upside down when they are forced to host a dinner for the young man and his parents. So these well known characters present an amazing show with fantastic humor.
The first performance of the musical was an out-of-town tryout in Chicago at the Ford Center in 2009. The show opened officially on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 8, 2010. After 34 previews and 725 performances, the Broadway production closed in the end of December 2011. An original cast recording was released in 2010 by the label Decca Broadway, including 21 songs and the bonus track for the iTunes sung by Andrew Lippa - Not Today.
The original Broadway production of The Addams Family was a total hit in 2010. The performance received four Broadway.com Audience Awards, two Drama League Awards, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Set Design.
A United States tour began in September 2011. The production will perform to more than 30 cities in the U.S. and Canada in 2011 and 2012, including Houston, Boston, Hartford, Durham, Baltimore, Cleveland, St Paul, San Diego, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Pittsburgh and more.
