Disney's Beauty and the Beast is a fabulous musical based on the 1991 Disney animated film. Alan Menken composed the music for the film and seven new songs were written for the stage. The creative team also included Howard Ashman and Tim Rice writing the lyrics and Linda Woolverton composing a book.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn how to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out and if the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
The musical premiered at the Music Hall in Houston, Texas, and ran from November 28, 1993, through December 26, 1993. Disney's Beauty and the Beast opened on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in 1994 and ran there until 1999. On November 11, 1999, the performance was transferred to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The musical closed on July 29, 2007. The production ran on Broadway for 5,464 performances between 1994 and 2007, becoming Broadway's eighth-longest running production in history.
The show had four US national tours as the last ran in 2011. Disney's Beauty and the Beast performed around the world in a total of 14 countries in 116 cities.
A junior version of the musical for middle and high school students was published by Music Theater International.
Between 1994 and 1999 recordings of the musical were released on CD six times. They included the original Broadway cast, the original Australian cast, the original Vienna cast, the original London cast, the original Stuttgart cast and the original Madrid cast.
