Blue Man Group or BMG is an amazing project for theatrical shows and concerts. The group creates a unique form of entertainment utilizing music, comedy and multimedia. Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton founded it in 1987. Their live shows always include a trio of performers. The Blue Men wear blue grease paint on their heads. It never dries. This effect allows the Blue Men to maintain that wet gooey look throughout the show. They play instruments such as drums and odd horns made from various plumbing fixtures. BMG involves the audience in their routines by staging quirky, non-human like behavior, and they behave as though everything is a mystery that needs to be investigated fully.
Because of the big success of the theatrical shows, a parent company called Blue Man Productions was created, which produces all the Blue Man Group shows in the world. Although the artists and founders Wink, Goldman and Stanton still perform, but they have taken on administrative roles in the company.
Usually the shows are different in each city - the performances are based on the size of the theatre and the cultural aspects of each community. They involve the audience in the performance by using different material, lights and subjects.
Blue Man Group made their first audio recording in 1999. The album Audio included full-length instrumentals and clips from their stage performances. It was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2002 they were in the Area 2 tour led by Moby (Richard Melville Hall) and were more rock and less theatrical for the tour. Songs were included in the album The Complex (2003) from the tour. The album’s release brought on The Complex Rock Tour which was followed by the How to Be a Megastar Tour 2.0 and 2.1 from 2006 through 2008. These tours were entirely different Blue Man productions, created as rock concert experiences.
On TV, Blue Man Group had appearances on The Tonight Show, Las Vegas, Ellen, Scrubs, Arrested Development and others.
Throughout the years the BMG organization also focused educational projects, like a touring Children's Museum exhibit, called Making Waves. They even established The Blue School in Manhattan in 2006. They say that the mission is "to cultivate creative, joyful and compassionate inquirers who use courageous and innovative thinking to build a harmonious and sustainable world".
