American Idiot Tickets:
American Idiot is a single act musical. The performance is a unique and untraditional adaptation of Green Day's album American Idiot (2004), labeled as a punk rock opera. The album won the 2005 Grammy for Best Rock Album.
The creative team includes the Green Day's vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong who is lyricist and co-writer of the book, and also Michael Mayer (Director and Co-Book Writer), Tom Kitt (Music Supervisor, Arrangements and Orchestration), Steven Hoggett (Choreographer) and Jared Stein (Music Director).
The musical tells the extraordinary story of three lifelong friends. Jesus of Suburbia - the lead character from the punk rock opera, was renamed to Johnny and the writers have included two more main characters - Will and Tunny. The men have to choose between their safe suburban homes and chasing their dreams. Their quest leads them on the most exhilarating theatrical journey.
American Idiot came on stage for the first time in 2009 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The musical almost immediately became a successful hit and Green Day decided to take the cast into their Studio 880 to make a recorded version of the song 21 Guns. The track was released to iTunes for download on December 22, 2009. The original cast recording of the musical was released on April 20, 2010.
The show opened officially on Broadway on April 20, 2010, at St James Theatre and closed on April 24, 2011, after 27 previews and 421 performances. The musical was nominated for the 2010 Tony Award as Best Musical, and won two Tony Awards for its scenic and lighting design. The show also won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, plus a Drama Desk Award, two Broadway.com Audience Awards and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
The production started it's North American tour in December 2011 from Toronto, Ontario. In 2012 American Idiot will be touring the United Kingdom and Ireland.
