Riverdance is a theatrical show, consisting of traditional Irish stepdancing. This is a type of performance dance, based on the traditional Irish dance, characterized by solo dancers who dance with hands by their sides and upper body stiff, making quick movements of the feet, often with a troupe. Riverdance is the show that popularized that unique kind of dancing.
Riverdance originated as a small performance during the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994. Later John McColgan and Moya Doherty started producing and directing the fabulous show through the production company Abhann Productions, based in Dublin.
The stars of the first performances were the Irish Dancing Champions Jean Butler and Michael Flatley. The production included RTE Concert Orchestra and the Celtic choral group Anuna. In 1995 the show ran for five weeks in Dublin and had an audience of 120 000 people. On 8 May 1995, Riverdance performed at the Royal Gala 50th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day celebrations at the special invitation of Prince Charles. Over 20 million people from different countries discovered the magic of the Irish dance.
Also in 1995, the show Riverdance released a video record. It immediately become number one in the British charts and became the all time highest selling music video in the United Kingdom.
For the first time the show was performed in America in 1996. The debut was at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City and achieved really big success.
In 2000 Riverdance moved to Broadway for a year at the Gershwin Theatre. The dancing stars were Pat Roddy and Eileen Martin and the singers - Brian Kennedy and Tsidii Le Loka.
In 2011 the show released the project Riverdance on Ice on NBC. In May Riverdance performed at a Celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Ireland. The Gala concert at the Convention Centre Dublin was produced by Riverdance Director John McColgan and was attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, President Mary McAleese.
