Monty Python's Spamalot is a famous comedy musical. Spamalot is based the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The title comes from a line in the movie, “we eat ham, and jam and Spam a lot.” The English comedian Eric Idle, who was a member of the British comedy group Monty Python, wrote the musical's book and lyrics and collaborated with John Du Prez on most of the music. The musical is a parody of the legend of King Arthur's knights’ quests for the Holy Grail. The main plot is about King Arthur's special relationship with his steed Patsy, his creation of a motley menagerie of knights and their collective quest for the Holy grail.
The incredible success of the show may be is hidden in its music. Spamalot covers different styles, including Gregorian chant, medieval organum, French can-can, rock and roll. The most famous songs are He is not Dead Yet, The Song That Goes Like This, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail, Run Away, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life and You Won't Succeed on Broadway.
On 21 December 2004, previews of the performance started in Chicago's Shubert Theatre and it officially opened on 9 January 2005. After a month, the musical previewed on Broadway, at New York's Shubert Theatre, and officially opened on 17 March 2005. The production won the Tony Award of the 2004-2005 season for Best Musical and was nominated for other 14 Tony’s.
After the big success, the production started a tour around USA. The North American tour commenced in spring 2006 and finished in 2009. The tour won three 2007 Touring Broadway Awards, including Best New Musical. A Second North American tour launched on 24 September 2010 from Waterbury, CT, and ended 26 June 2011 in Dallas, TX. Throughout the years, Monty Python's Spamalot had performances in England, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Poland, Canada, Ireland, Italy and Netherlands.
