Stars on Ice is a traveling figure skating production conceived by gold medal Olympian Scott Hamilton and Robert D Kain, his manager, after Hamilton's contract with Ice Capades had been terminated because the producers of the show felt that male figure skaters did not sell tickets well. Due to his separation from Ice Capades, one of the notions Hamilton had was for the show to highlight male figure skaters and create financial opportunities for them, although the productions have always featured female figure skaters as well. It was also intended to be an adult production and showcase the skills of the figure skaters as opposed to a theatrical ice show typical during that time. The show is a figure skating production that includes singles, paired, and multi-cast dance routines performed to more modern pop and mainstream music - Footloose by Kenny Logins, I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, Take Me There by Rascal Flatts, Love in This Club by Usher are a few of the currently used musical scores.
When Stars on Ice began back in October of 1986, the show was financially strapped and had a mere five stops in the US on it's first tour. Now, 25 years later, the wildly successful show has made over 1,300 appearances in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Mexico and throughout Europe. The show was originally opened as Scott Hamilton America Tour, later Stars on Ice was sponsored by Discover Card from 1988 until 1999, then Target from 2000 until 2002 and Smucker's from 2003 until 2010. The show is now simply titled Stars on Ice.
Although Scott Hamilton started Stars on Ice and starred in the productions, he quit performing after the 2001 season but still produces the shows. The show has cast World Champion and Olympic Medal winning figure skaters from all over the planet since its inception including Scott Hamilton, Dorothy Hamill, Yuka Sato, Rosalynn Sumners, Kitty and Peter Carruthers, Rob McCall, Rosalynn Sumners, Alexei Yagudin, Evan Lysacek, Chen Lu, Jeremy Abbott, Lucinda Ruh and many more. For the 2012 tour the stars of the show are Sasha Cohen, Kurt Browning, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Ilia Kulik, Todd Eldredge, Joannie Rochette, Kyoko Ina, John Zimmerman, Ryan Bradley, Sinead and John Kerr, Sahah Hughes, Jamie Sale, David Pelletier and Miko Ando.
