

The New York Yankees competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the American League's (AL) East Division, and is based in the The Bronx in New York City. They are one of the AL's eight charter (original) franchises. The team was founded as the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 and moved to New York City in 1903 as the New York Highlanders before becoming the New York Yankees in 1913. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees' home field was Yankee Stadium. In 2009, they moved into (New) Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees hold MLB records for having won 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants. 43 players and 11 managers have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, including Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Yogi Berra.
The Yankees have gained widespread popularity and a huge fanbase. In pursuit of winning championships, the franchise has a large payroll to recruit talent which was around $200 million at the start of the 2008 season. The Yankees' rivalry with the Boston Red Sox is one of the oldest and most popular rivalrys in North American professional sports.

Yankee Stadium is located in The Bronx in New York City. The
stadium is the home ballpark for the New York Yankees MLB Baseball
Team, replacing the previous Yankee Stadium, built in 1923. The new
ballpark was constructed across the street, on the former site of
Macombs Dam Park, north-northeast of the 1923 Yankee Stadium. The
stadium capacity for baseball is 50,287 (seats), and 52,325
(including standing room). For football it is 54,251. The stadium
opened on April 2, 2009, and was built at a cost of $1.5 billion
dollars. It is also home to the NCAA's Pinstripe Bowl. Rappers Jay-Z
and Eminem performed the first concert at Yankee Stadium on September
13, 2010.
