The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team, 16-time NBA Champions. They play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. The head coach of the team is Mike Brown, supported by the assistant coaches Quin Snyder, Chuck Person, and John Kuester. The 2011-2012 Roster includes the players Matt Barnes (9), Steve Blake (5), Kobe Bryant (24), Andrew Bynum (17), Derrick Caracter (45), Devin Ebanks (3), Derek Fisher (2), Pau Gasol (16), Andrew Goudelock (0), Jason Kapono (28), Josh McRoberts (6), Darius Morris (1), Troy Murphy (14), Luke Walton (4) and Metta World Peace (15).

The history of the team started in 1947, at the time when it was the Minneapolis Lakers. In 1948 the team joined the National Basketball Association. In 1960 the Lakers moved to Los Angeles and the team renamed. The Lakers play all of their home games at Staples Center, which they share with their local NBA rival, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League, and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association. Staples Center opened in fall 1999, and seats up to 19,060 for Lakers games.

The Los Angeles Lakers have 23 representatives inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame - 16 players, 4 head coaches, 1 assistant coach, and 2 contributors. The list of the players includes the great sportsmen Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich, Connie Hawkins, Magic Johnson, Clyde Lovellette, Karl Malone, Slater Martin, Bob McAdoo, George Mikan, Vern Mikkelsen, Jim Pollard, Dennis Rodman, James Worthy and Jerry West. The Hall of Fame coaches include: Phil Jackson, John Kundla, Pat Riley and Bill Sharman, as well as Tex Winter, Phil Jackson's long-time assistant coach.

In 1997, the NBA announced a list of the 50 best players in its history - the careers of eight of them were connected with the Lakers: George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Elgin Baylor and James Worthy.
