The LSU Tigers football team are the official Louisiana State University football team. The team played their first game on November 25, 1893, and won the first about a year later. By 1896 they adopted the nickname Tigers and had a perfect six wins and zero losses season under the direction of Coach Allen Jeardeau. They are sometimes referred to as the Fighting Tigers or Bayou Bengals. The Tigers compete in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in the Western Division of the SEC. All of their home games are played at LSU Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The current head coach of the team is Les Miles and has been in the position since 2005. The Tigers are an extremely sucessful team and have been a top ten team consistently since the 1999 season. LSU began the 2011 season with 721 wins giving them the 12th most in NCAA history, and the 4th most of any SEC team. They also have the 14th best all-time winning percentage in the NCAA, and the 4th best in the SEC starting the 2011 season at 0.641. They have several rivals including Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators Mississippi Rebels (Ole Miss), Texas A&M Aggies and Tulane Green Wave. The team has played in numerous bowl games including the BCS National Championship Game in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 seasons and is the only team to have won multiple BCS national titles. Several coaches and players have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and have won various awards including Billy Cannon with a 1959 Heisman Trophy and Glenn Dorsey with four individual awards for the 2007 season - Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award, Outland Trophy and Lott Trophy. The team colors are purple and gold and the tradition of them started on November 25, 1893, in the form of ribbons pinned to the players uniforms. The team mascot is Mike the Tiger and a live tiger has been kept as an LSU tradition since October 21, 1936, with a total of six different tigers (four Bengal tigers and two mixed breeds) representing Mike the Tiger having been kept since then, while the sideline counterpart didn't appear until the 1950s.
