World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. or WWE is an American company that primarily deals in professional wrestling. It is the largest professional wrestling company in the world, reaching audiences in 145 different countries. The company is chaired by Vince McMahon who is also the major owner and CEO of the company. Together with his family, they own approximately 70% of WWE and 96% of the voting power in the company.
WWE makes money from everything - films, music, product licensing and direct product sales. The company's headquarters are located in Stamford, Connecticut. WWE has offices in New York, Los Angeles, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Singapore and Mumbai.
The company started in 1952 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation, under the banner of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) and later the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). In 1982 the company was sold to Titan Sports that became World Wrestling Federation Entertainment and finally World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002. In 2011 the name was simplified to WWE.
Today the company produces nine different shows - Raw, SmackDown, Tribute to the Troops, WWE NXT, WWE Superstars, WWE Tough Enough, Survivor Series, WWE TLC and WrestleMania. Modern professional wrestling is based on martial arts, which combines thousands of years of history and attractive appearance, signature sounds and art features. Of course, above all are the grappling techniques like choke holds, take-downs, fighting in the clinch and striking in strategic ways. The wrestlers today are great athletes and talented actors.
WWE has produced hundreds of superstars, like Tony Atlas, Shawn Michaels, Jesse Ventura, Hulk Hogan, Billy Graham, Bret Hart, Andre the Giant, Ivan Putski. Their stories can be found in the WWE Hall of Fame, among others.
