The Miami Heat is a professional basketball team, a member of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association. The head coach of the team is Erik Spoelstra, supported by Bob McAdoo, Keith Askins, Ron Rothstein, David Fizdale, Chad Kammerer, Octavio De La Grana, and Bill Foran. The 2011-2012 roster includes the players Shane Battier (31), Chris Bosh (1), Mario Chalmers (15), Norris Cole (30), Eddy Curry (34), Mickell Gladness (32), Terrel Harris (14), Udonis Haslem (40), Juwan Howard (5), LeBron James (6), James Jones (22), Mike Miller (13), Dexter Pittman (45) and Dwyane Wade (3).
The team was formed in 1988, based in Miami, Florida. The Miami Heat won the NBA Championship in 2006. The team owns two Conference titles (2006, 2011), and eight Division titles (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011). In 1992, the Miami Heat became the first of the four recent expansion teams to make it to the playoffs. In 1994, the team made the NBA Playoffs for the second time and this success was repeated in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009.
The first home arena of the team was Miami Arena. Since 1999, their home is the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami.
Some of the most notable players of the team throughout the years are Rony Seikaly (1988-1994), Glen Rice (1989-1995), Alonzo Mourning (1995-2001, 2004-2008), Tim Hardaway (1996-2001), Jamal Mashburn (1997-2000), Dwyane Wade (2003-present), Udonis Haslem (2003-present), Shaquille O'Neal (2004-2008), LeBron James (2010-present) and Chris Bosh (2010-present).
There have been six head coaches for the Miami Heat: Ron Rothstein, Erik Spoelstra, Kevin Loughery, Alvin Gentry, Pat Riley, Stan Van Gundy and Erik Spoelstra. Riley is one of the top 10 coaches in NBA history. He received the NBA Coach of the Year Award in the 1996-97 season, and also was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.

The American Airlines Arena first opened its doors on December 31, 1999, at a cost of $213 million. The facility has a capacity of 19,600 with 2,105 club seats, 80 luxury suites, and 76 private boxes. The arena is located in Downtown Miami, Florida along Biscayne Bay.
