Here are some answers to the questions we are frequently asked at MyCityRocks:
Q. What is MyCityRocks?
A. MyCityRocks is a social engagement community designed to help our friends get involved in their cities, learn about and enjoy local entertainment and leisure options, and help make their part of the world a better place to live. MyCityRocks is divided into communities in cities around the world, and each local community in turn may have subgroups (clubs) designed to meet the interests of members in areas like music, art, food, sports, romance, philanthropy and travel.
Q. How do I join MyCityRocks?
A. To become a MyCityRocks member, you should sign up directly with us using the membership form for your city. You can find links to all the city membership forms using this page. What happens after that depends on your city -- many of our cities are still building a basic membership base, and won't have any activities until interest levels are high enough. Even in cities that are very active, we generally won't send you more than one or two messages a week, and we will keep your email address strictly private. Once you sign in, you will receive an email message that you will need to respond to in order to confirm your membership.
Q. Is there any cost to joining MyCityRocks?
A. No. Membership in MyCityRocks is entirely FREE.
Q. Do I need to get a MyCityRocks shirt to be a member?
A. No. Many of our members enjoy representing their city, and you are welcome to do so if you wish, but there is absolutely no requirement to do so.
Q. Is MyCityRocks a social networking site like MySpace?
A. No. MyCityRocks is a grassroots-driven independent company with a very different focus -- our objective is to use social engagement technology to help our members have fun, make a difference out in the real world, meet people who share their passions, and enjoy their leisure time to the fullest. In the early days of the Internet, the focus was on business models that created the tools (e.g., Netscape) and the network (e.g., Worldcom). Over time, the tools and the networks became commodities, and people realized that the greatest value came from those business models that could use those tools to provide engaging content and interactivity. This echoed a similar evolution that had happened many years earlier with television, where over time those businesses providing content and programming (e.g., ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX) eclipsed those companies manufacturing televisions and broadcast equipment. Similarly, as Web 2.0 technologies mature, over time it is inevitable that the enterprises providing the greatest value will focus on how the tools are used to engage people in their communities, rather than on the underlying tools and networks themselves.
Q. What cities will MyCityRocks be in next?
A. If you don't see your city or one nearby listed, don't despair. We've launched membership drives in our first 100 locations, and realize that many of the great cities of the world could not be initially included. Everything we do is driven by YOU, so if you live in a city you would like to see added, just send us a note and let us know, and let your friends know too! When we see that there is enough interest in making MyCityRocks happen in your city, we will add it. It is all up to you and your community.
Q. How did MyCityRocks come about?
A. Please see the Our Story page on this web site. You also might find the article "The Acquisition of MySpace" to provide a lot of useful background information on the history of online social engagement ventures that led up to the launch of MyCityRocks, and the article "Marketing to the MySpace Generation & The Economics of Social Networking" provides further elaboration.
Q. What can I do to help?
A. MyCityRocks is a largely grassroots effort that is driven by the interests and participation of its members. You can simply come out to some of the events we sponsor when they interest you, or you can get involved in a much deeper way as a MyCityRocks Conductor or Street Team Member in your city. See our Get Involved page for more details on different ways you can participate.
Q. I want MyCityRocks to sponsor and promote my event. How can I make that happen?
A. Send us a note and tell us what you have in mind. We are here to promote the local scene, and we are particularly interested in helping promote events that support the community and charitable causes.
Q. What happens if I break one of your "3 Simple Rules"?
A. Then you are in big trouble, and it is going to go onto your permanent record and follow you around for the rest of your life.
