Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are an American rock band from Gainesville, Florida. They formed in 1976 by singer and guitarist Tom Petty, lead guitarist Mike Campbell, and keyboardist Benmont Tench when their previous band Mudcrutch disbanded after the failure of their single "Depot Street" from Shelter Records to chart. The three would would join with Ron Blair on bass and Stan Lynch on drums, and achieved initial success in the UK with their single "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll". They would go on to gain traction in the U.S. with early singles "Breakdown" and "American Girl," and their second release "You're Gonna Get It!" became the band's first gold album. The band's career has spanned over 30 years and they have won numerous Grammy Awards, the 2006 Billboard Century Award, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
