

The Civil Wars is an American indie folk duo, comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White. The musicians met during a Nashville, Tennessee, songwriting session in 2008. Joy Williams is a singer and songwriter with a successful solo career, born in 1982 in Santa Cruz, California. When she was 17 years old, Williams signed her first recording contract and in 2001 released her debut studio album "Joy Williams." Since then, she has released 11 solo studio projects. John Paul White is a singer-songwriter from Alabama. As a songwriter, White signed his first publishing deal in 1999. His solo discography includes only one album, released on Capitol Records - "The Long Goodbye." In 2009 The Civil Wars released the album "Live at Eddie's Attic" and the EP "Poison & Wine." The live album was released on their website as a free download and had over 200,000 hits. The EP included four tracks "Poison & Wine," "Go," "Pressing Flowers," and "Tip of My Tongue." The single "Poison & Wine" was featured on several episodes of the hit TV series "Grey's Anatomy," "90210," and "Pretty Little Liars," as well as the soundtrack to the movie "Something Borrowed." In 2011 The Civil Wars released several musical projects. In February they put on their first studio album "Barton Hollow." It became the number one downloaded album on iTunes and charted at number 1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart. The album peaked at number 12 on the US Billboard 200. In 2011, the duo released their second live album "iTunes Live: SXSW." On November 25, 2011, The Civil Wars released the EP "Tracks in the Snow." In 2011, the album "Barton Hollow" received Grammy nominations for the Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance categories.
