Staind is an American rock band that formed in 1995 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The band consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist Johnny April, and drummer Jon Wysocki. The band met through friends and started covering groups like KoRn, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, and Tool. They played at local clubs for a year and a half and self-released their debut album, "Tormented," in 1996. During this time, Staind acquired a concert slot with Limp Bizkit through longtime friend Justin Cantor. Before their set, Fred Durst, the singer for Limp Bizkit, approached Aaron with a copy of their CD. Fred thought that they were Satan worshippers due to the nature of their cover art, and unsuccessfully tried to get them kicked off the bill. The band thought they had blown a great opportunity until Fred saw their show. After their set, Fred approached them and said they were the the best band he had seen in two years. He was starting a production company and wanted to work with them. With Fred's direction the band reworked their songs to feature more of Aaron's singing and less of the screaming that was prevalent in their music. In 1999, Staind released its major label debut "Dysfunction" on Flip Records. The album, which was co-produced by Fred Durst and Terry Date, who also produced acts like Soundgarden, Deftones, and Pantera, and received comparisons to Tool and Korn. In particular, Aaron Lewis was lauded for his vocals, which were compared to those of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. The album reached number one on Billboard's Heatseaker Charts and jumped to number 74 on Billboard's Top 200 Album Charts. The nine-track album produced three singles, "Just Go," "Mudshovel," and "Home." "Mudshovel" and "Home" both received radio play, cracking the Top 20 of Billboard's Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. To date, the band has recorded seven studio albums, had five chart-topping singles, and sold over 15 million records worldwide.
