Red Hot Chili Peppers started in 1983 in Los Angeles, California. Founded by Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Michael "Flea" Balzary (bass), Jack Irons (drums) and Hillel Slovak (guitar), the group began working with pivotal guitarist John Frusciante after the death of Slovak in 1988. The current line-up consists of drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined in 2009. The band's sound is a unique blend of rock, funk, punk, hip hop, and psychedelic rock. The band has survived numerous battles with drug and alcohol addictions and gone on to sell over 50 million records worldwide. The have received eight Grammy Awards and in 2011 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
