The Magnetic Fields began as solo studio project of singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt called Buffalo Rome. Merritt recruited the help of friend Claudia Gonson, who had played in the band The Zinnias with Merritt during high school, to form a live band. The group changed it's name to The Magnetic Fields, named after the French novel "Les Champs Magnetiques" by surrealist novelist Andre Breton. The band performed in and around Boston, utilizing such varied instruments as cello, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, accordion, flute, xylophone, and Marxophone, along with their usual setup of synthesizers, guitars, and effects. Although their musical style is ever-changing they are most commonly identified by the pop genres and subgenres of synthpop, indie pop, and noise pop. The band is comprised of members Stephin Merritt (ukulele/keyboard/lead vocals), Claudia Gonson (percussion/piano/vocals), Sam Davol (cello/flute), and John Woo (banjo/guitar). Over the past 20 years the group has risen in notoriety and have been signed to such labels as Feel Good All Over, Merge Records, and Nonesuch Records.
