Mary Jean "Lily" Tomlin is a beloved American comedian and actress. Her performances are usually based on observational and improvisational comedy. She was born in 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. Her career started in the middle of the 1960s. She has appeared on numerous TV series and different show programs, like "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" (1969 -1973), "Lily" (1973, 1974), "The Lily Tomlin Special" 1975), "And the Band Played On" (1993), "The Magic School Bus" ( 1994 - 1997), "The West Wing" (2002 - 2006), "Damages" (2010), and "RuPaul's Drag Race 3" (2011). She has starred in numerous movie productions, including roles in 27 films. In 1975, for her role in the musical comedy film "Nashville," she received Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for "Best Supporting Actress," National Society of Film Critics Award for "Best Supporting Actress," and New York Film Critics Circle Award for "Best Supporting Actress." Lily Tomlin received a Silver Bear for "Best Actress" at Berlin in 1977 for starring in the movie "The Late Show." In 1981 for the role in "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" she received the Fantafestival Award for "Best Actress." Ten years later, Tomlin won an American Comedy Award for "Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture (Leading Role)" and Golden Needle Award for "Best Actress" for the movie "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe." In 1993 after starring in the movie "Short Cuts " she received an American Comedy Award for "Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Leading Role)", and Golden Globe Special Award for "Best Ensemble Cast." Lily Tomlin was the first woman to appear solo in a Broadway show with her premiere of "Appearing Nitely" in 1977. In 1985, the actress starred in another one-woman Broadway show "The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe," and won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.
