Joshua David Bell is one of the greatest violinists of our times. He is referred to by the critics as a "classical music superstar." He was born in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1967. He became popular at the age of 14, after a highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. After three decades, Joshua Bell is recognized as one of the finest classical musicians in the world. He has recorded more than 36 CDs. Bell's instrument is a 300-year-old Stradivarius violin called the Gibson ex Huberman, which was made in 1713 during what is known as Antonio Stradivari's "Golden Era." In 2007, as a part of a social experiment initiated by the Washington Post, Joshua Bell played as an incognito street busker at the Metro subway station L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C. He played Bach piece "Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin", with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. The result of the experiment was that in 43 minutes, according to Washington Post "of the 1,097 people who walked by, hardly anyone stopped. One man listened for a few minutes, a couple of kids stared, and one woman, who happened to recognize the violinist, gaped in disbelief." About 20 people gave him money, and he collected $32. Bell received no more attention than any other street musician. Journalist Gene Weingarten was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for his outstanding and thought provoking analysis of the experiment. Throughout the years Joshua Bell received numerous awards. He was responsible for all solo violin music (composed by John Corigliano) in the film "The Red Violin," and the album captured the Oscar for Best Original Score. Bell received a Grammy for the Nicholas Maw Violin Concertos (1999). In 2005 he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. In 2011 Joshua Bell was named the new music director of the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields chamber orchestra. Bell became only the second person to hold the post since the orchestra was founded in 1958.
