Flogging Molly has been called a "Celtic punk ensemble" and an "Irish rock band with a Celtic feel." The band formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, California. The present lineup includes Dave King (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bodhran), Dennis Casey (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals), Matthew Hensley (accordion, concertina, piano, vocals), Nathen Maxwell (bass guitar, vocals), Bridget Regan (violin, tin whistle, classic guitar, uileann pipes, vocals), Robert Schmidt (mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo, five string banjo, vocals) and George Schwindt (drums, percussion). Unusual for fledgling band, but Flogging Molly's first release was a live album. It was released in 1997 and titled "Alive Behind the Green Door." It included ten songs, two covers, and eight original songs. The tracks were later recorded in studio and were included in other albums. The next few years the band toured across the USA and Europe and performed their brand of Irish folk rock. Flogging Molly's first studio album "Swagger" was released in 2000. It captured fans around the world with the use of drawling guitar and banjo, harmonica and driving rhythms. The song "The Worst Day Since Yesterday" was used in the film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." In 2002 the band released the album "Drunken Lullabies," a mix of brash punk rock guitars, violins, whistles and accordions. The next record was "Within a Mile of Home", released in 2004. The album included 15 songs and a guest appearance from Lucinda Williams on "Factory Girls". The album "Float" was released in 2008. It became evident that the songs were beginning to move away from the lyrical content of earlier works, but the band continued to win more and more fans, especially from their live performances. The band's fifth album, "Speed of Darkness" was released in 2011, by the band's own record label, "Borstal Beat Records." Flogging Molly define the album as a record that continually asks the hard questions of faith and suffering; belief and deliverance.
