Elton John has been declared one of the greatest artists of all times. He is a rock singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, and an actor. John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex. He started to play the piano at the early age of four and at the age of 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. His first band, Bluesology, was formed in 1961. Later the artist took his stage name from the Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and the frontman Long John Baldry. His star raised in 1970s when he turned into one of Britain's most internationally acclaimed musicians. Since 1969 Elton John has released 31 studio albums, four live albums, 11 soundtrack albums, and 16 compilation albums. Throughout the years he has received numerous awards, including six Grammy Awards (in 1987 for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group," 1991 for "Best Instrumental Composition," 1994 "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance," 1997 for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance," 1999 for "Grammy Legend Award," 2001 "Best Musical Show Album"), and an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song" in 1994 for the hit "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from "The Lion King." In 2000 he received Tony Award for "Best Original Score" for Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida" and in 1975 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1992 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1995, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That same year he was made a Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). For his charitable work, Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998.
