Counting Crows is an American rock band from Berkeley, California. Singer Adam Duritz and producer/guitarist David Bryson formed the group in San Francisco in 1991. They began as an acoustic duo, playing gigs in and around Berkeley and San Francisco, but by 1993 the band had grown to a stable lineup of Duritz as vocalist, Bryson on guitar, Matt Malley on bass guitar, Charlie Gillingham on keyboards, and Steve Bowman as drummer. The band was a regular in the Bay Area scene, and the same year signed to Geffen Records. They released their debut album in 1993, "August and Everything After," which featured the hit single "Mr. Jones." The album sold 7 million copies, but success took a toll on the bandas Duritz suffered a nervous breakdown, which was not his first. The band would recover and go on to sell more than 20 million albums worldwide, and they received a 2004 Academy Award nomination for their song "Accidentally in Love," which was included in the film "Shrek 2." The band's influences include the likes of Van Morrison, R.E.M., Mike + The Mechanics, Bob Dylan, and Nirvana.
