Yiannis Hrysomallis is a Greek pianist and composer. As a performer is he is known simply as Yanni. He was born in 1954 in Kalamata, Greece, but spent most of his life in the United States. He is a self-taught pianist, keyboardist and composer. His success was founded on his ability to explore and mix different musical genres. Yanni came to America in 1972 and attended the University of Minnesota. He started playing the piano and electronic keyboards in local rock and roll bands. During these early years he developed his personal musical style, which he prefers to call "contemporary instrumental." His first solo album "Optimystique" was released in 1980. For the next decade he released four albums and moved to Hollywood, where he recorded 4 film scores and re-released "Optimystique." Yanni became extremely popular after a 1990 concert where he was accompanied by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. His first Grammy-nominated album was "Dare to Dream," released in 1992.
After three big tours in America, Yanni started an international tour in 1993 performing in venues as the Toji Temple in Kyoto, Japan, Royal Albert Hall in London, and at the Acropolis in his homeland of Greece. This tour inspired him to release the his next album and video record "Full Circle - Yanni Live at Acropolis." The album sold more than 7 million copies. The album was number one on Billroard's chart "Top New Age Albums," and the video received an Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Drama Series, Variety Series, Miniseries or a Special." In 2003 Yanni released his 13th album "Ethnicity." The album utilized different instruments, from the Australian didgeridoo, a Celtic violin, an Armenian duduk, to an Indian table. Some of the tracks included solo arias, group chants and even vocals. In 2011, he released the highly-anticipated album "Truth of Touch." His extraordinary life is chronicled in his autobiography "Yanni in Words," released in 2003 and co-authored by David Rensin and Brendan Rossi.
