Andrea Bocelli is an Italian opera singer known for his his signature tenor described as "full and powerful, with a versatility ranging from the belcanto to the furore of verismo." He was born in 1958 in Lajatico, Italy. At the age of six he started playing the piano, and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, harp, guitar, and drums. Burdened with congenital glaucoma, he became blind at the age of twelve after an accident during a football game. His musical career started in 1990s. His extreme talent was discovered by the Italian record producer Caterina Caselli and in 1992 his unique voice was noticed by the Italian rock star Zucchero who paved Bocelli's way to the world stage. In December 1993 Andrea Bocelli debuted in the classical world with a concert at the Teatro Romolo Valli in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He had an opportunity to make his debut on the operatic stage in 1994 with Verdi's "Macbeth" (in the role of Macduff) directed by Claudio Desderi. After reaching the highest point in the Italian song competition "Sanremo Festival" in 1994, the next year Bocelli was invited to enter the main competition with "Con te partiro" and finished in fourth place. In 1996 he released an arrangement of the song as a duet with Sarah Brightman with the title "Time to say Goodbye." The song was included in his first compilation album "Romanza," released in 1997. The album reached number one on the charts in Italy, Poland, Norway, Netherlands, France, Swiss, Austria, Belgium, and Portugal. In 1999, Bocelli made his debut in the United States in Massenet's "Werther." At the same time his third pop album "Sogno" was released which included Andrea's duet with Celine Dion of "The Prayer," which had already won the Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Oscar. Throughout the years Andrea Bocelli has released seven pop albums, six classical albums, two compilation albums and in 2011 he released his first live album "Concerto, One Night in Central Park." In 2010 Bocelli was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to Live Theater.
