John Royce "Johnny" Mathis is an American pop music and jazz singer. Throughout his career he has released 97 albums and 87 hit singles. Johnny Mathis has sold over 350 million records worldwide. In 2011 Johnny was named as part of Billboard Magazine's 50 Top Adult Contemporary Artists. He has the 5th highest total in the chart's history with 49 hits. He was born in 1935 in Gilmer, Texas. In 1955 his talent was discovered by George Avakian, then head of Jazz A&R at Columbia Records. After hearing Johnny sing, he sent the now famous telegram to his record company: "Have found phenomenal 19 year old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts." Johnny Mathis released his first studio album in 1956. "Johnny Mathis: A New Sound In Popular Song" included 12 tracks, jazz oriented renditions of popular standards. His debut release wasn't very well acclaimed. Soon he started to work with the producer Mitch Miller and the result was a string of lushly produced albums and hit singles. His discography includes jazz, pop, Brazilian and Spanish music, Soul, R&B, soft rock, Broadway, blues and country songs. In 1972 Johnny Mathis received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Johnny has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times - in 1998 (Traditional Pop (Single) - "It's Not for Me to Say"), in 2002 (Traditional Pop (Single) - "Misty"), and in 2008 (Traditional Pop (Single) - "Chances Are"). In 2003 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Johnny Mathis was presented with the Academy of Achievement's Golden Plate Award at a ceremony at its headquarters in Washington on December 10, 2011.
