Wynton Learson Marsalis is an American jazz musician. He is a trumpeter, composer, and music educator. According to critics he is the world's first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1961. He studied both jazz and classical music and in 1982 recorded his debut self-titled album, using the players from Miles Davis' 1960s quintet Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter. The album peaked at number 165 on the Billboard 200 and number nine on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart. Since then, he has released 75 albums and collaborated with great artists as Art Blakey, Chico Freeman, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Shirley Horn. In 1984 and 1985 Marsalis became the first musician to win dual Grammy Awards for best soloist on both a jazz and classical record. In his career Wynton Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards. In 1997 he became the first jazz musician ever to win Pulitzer Prize for Music for the three hour long oratorio about slavery, "Blood on the Fields." Marsalis has received over 30 honorary degrees, including those conferred by Boston University, Yale University, Columbia University, New York University, and Harvard University. Currently Marsalis is the Artistic Director of "Jazz at Lincoln Center" part of "Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts." The Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) serves as the resident orchestra performing at "Frederick P. Rose Hall" and around the world. Throughout the years Marsalis has also written five books: "Sweet Swing Blues on the Road," "Jazz in the Bittersweet Blues of Life," "To a Young Musician: Letters from the Road," "Jazz ABZ (an A to Z collection of poems celebrating jazz greats)," and "Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life."
