Styx is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1970. The current lineup of the band includes James "J.Y." Young (guitars, backing and lead vocals, additional keyboards), Tommy Shaw (guitars, lead and backing vocals, mandolin, autoharp, talk box), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Lawrence Gowan (lead and backing vocals, keyboards, additional guitars), and Ricky Phillips (bass guitar, backing vocals, additional guitars). Throughout the years they have released 15 studio albums, six live albums, 14 compilation albums, and 31 singles. Styx debuted in 1972 with their self-titled studio album and attracted the critics' attention with their new sound and style. Soon the band transformed into a virtual arena rock prototype, counting on the powerful sound of the hard rock guitars, strong ballads, and elements of American musical theater. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, Styx became extremely popular all over the world and produced numerous smashing hits as "Lady" (1975), "Come Sail Away" (1977), "Babe" (1979), "The Best of Times" (1981), "Too Much Time on My Hands" (1981), and "Mr. Roboto" (1983), "Show Me the Way" (1990), "Don't Let It End" (1983) and "Renegade" (1978).
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Styx is one of the 1980s Top Multi-Platinum Album Recipients. The band released four consecutive albums that have been certified Multi-Platinum, for at least two million units sold each: "The Grand Illusion" (1977), "Pieces of Eight" (1978), "Cornerstone" (1979), and "Paradise Theatre" (1981).
