Formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington, American Rock Band Pearl Jam
has a line-up that includes Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff
Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Mike McCready
(lead guitar) and Matt Cameron (drummer), also of Soundgarden, who
has been with the band since 1998.
One of the key bands of the grunge movement in the early 1990s, Pearl
Jam was formed subsequent to the demise of Ament and Gossard's
previous band, Mother Love Bone. The band found mainstream success
with its debut album, Ten. Pearl Jam has often refused to conform
to traditional music industry practices, including not making music
videos and engaging in the boycotting of Ticketmaster.
Pearl Jam performs numerous benefit concerts in aid of various
charities. Recognizing the band's environmental activism and
large-scale efforts to decrease their own carbon emissions, on April
22, 2011, Pearl Jam was named 2011 Planet Defenders by Rock The
Earth.
