David Garrett is a classical violinist and recording artist. He was born in 1980 in Aachen, Germany. He was born David Bongartz but decided to adopt his mother's maiden name as a pseudonym. Garrett is a virtuoso with a violin. He started playing when he was four years old and won his first competition at age five. By the age of 9, he already played a Mozart Concert accompanied by a full orchestra. He signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon when he was 14. At the age of 17, he played with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta in Delhi and Bombay. In 1999 David Garrett moved to New York to attend the Juilliard, studying musicology and composition. He decided to leave the classical music genre and started to experiment with blending different genres. He discovered an ablitiy to combine classical elements with those of pop and rock as well as rhythm and blues. Later, in his live performances, David started to turn classical masterpieces like Beethoven's "Fifth" and Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" into classical rock symphonies. He would do the same with famous rock and pop songs like Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," and Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." In 2007 the artist released two studio albums in Europe, "Free" and "Virtuoso." The same year Garrett played with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, whom David toured with in the United States in 2008. His album "Encore" was released in 2008. The record included 16 tracks, including interpretations of "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson, "Who Wants to Live Forever?" by Queen, "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC, and "Summertime" by George Gershwin. He would continue to release an album annually.
