Angela "Ani" Maria DiFranco was born in 1970 in Buffalo, New York. She is an American singer and songwriter, and extremely talented multi-instrumentalist, playing the guitar, percussion, and the piano. Her music style includes different genres like Folk rock, indie, and alternative rock, and she describes herself as a "Little Folksinger." Her musical influences include John Hassell, Maceo Parker, Greg Brown, Utah Phillips, Gillian Welch, Bruce Springsteen, the Indigo Girls, Arlo Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, and Miles Davis. When she was only nineteen years old, Ani DiFranco established her own independent record label Righteous Babe Records. In 1999 she bought a church in downtown Buffalo to make as a recording studio. The Asbury Delaware United Methodist Church was converted into an entertainment venue with a 1,200 seat concert hall and later turned into the home of the label. In 1990 Ani DiFranco released her self-titled debut album, described as a hearty collection of radical folk songs and poetry. One of her most successful studio albums was "Evolve," released in 2003. The record peaked at number one on the Top Independent Albums Chart and at number 30 on The Billboard 200. DiFranco and art director Brian Grunert won a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package in 2004. This is one of a series of Grammy Awards presented for the visual look of an album. DiFranco is widely considered a feminist icon. In 2006, she received the "Woman of Courage Award" at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference and Young Feminist Summit in Albany, New York. She has released 17 studio albums, two compilations, three EPs, and seventeen live albums.
