Formed in 1995, Godsmack is an American Heavy metal band from Lawrence, Massachusetts. The band is consists of founder and frontman Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill, and drummer Shannon Larkin. After playing drums for more than 23 years, including bands like the defunct Strip Mind, Sully Erna decided to start a new band as the lead singer in 1995. His new band, The Scam, formed with Erna on vocals, Robbie Merrill on bass, local guitarist and friend Lee Richards on guitar, and Tommy Stewart on drums, and they quickly changed their name to Godsmack after recording their first demo. They name came when a friend told Erna that it looked like God smacked him in the face, when he got a cold sore shortly after making fun of somebody else with a cold sore, and the name stuck. After years of performing, Godsmack's CD landed in the hands of a night-time DJ for Boston radio station WAAF. The station put "Keep Away" into heavy rotation and the song rose to their number one spot very quickly. Erna noted that the band was probably selling about 50 albums a month until WAAF played their album. Then suddenly, they selling over a thousand records a week, while Erna was doing it all this from my bedroom. In 1998, they signed to Universal/Republic Records and released their self-titled debut CD. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number twenty-two, and was certified four times platinum by the RIAA in 2001. Godsmack has released five studio albums, one EP, four DVDs, and one greatest hits collection. They have had three consecutive number one albums (Faceless, IV, and The Oracle) on the Billboard 200, and have also scored a ratified 19 top ten rock radio hits, including 15 songs in the Top Five, a record number of top ten singles by a rock artist.
