Diana Jean Krall is a Canadian singer, pianist, and songwriter who was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 1964. Her style includes jazz and traditional pop. Her music is also based on Brazil's bossa nova wave, a widely popular style, based on the country's traditional samba rhythms, mixed with jazz improvisation. Krall is famous for her contralto vocals, falling between tenor and mezzo-soprano. In 1981 she won a Vancouver Jazz Festival scholarship to study at "Berklee College of Music" in Boston. After several years, Krall moved to Los Angeles where obtained a Canadian Arts Council grant to study with the American jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles. Her career exploded in 1999, when she won Grammy Award for Jazz Vocal Album Of The Year. The album title was "When I Look Into Your Eyes" and was her fifth studio project. Since then Diana Krall has won numerous awards, including 8 Canada's Juno Awards and three Grammy Awards. In 2000 she received a Juno Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album (2000) and her second Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance (2000). Krall received the Order of British Columbia in 2000 for being a good-will ambassador for British Columbia and epitomizing Canadian culture. In 2004, she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. In 2005, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. The discography of Diana Krall consists of nine studio albums, one live album, two compilations, and three video albums. She released several collaboration projects with singers and musicians like Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Anne Murray, Sarah McLachlan, Geoffrey Keezer, and Yo-Yo Ma. Krall also has developed herself as an actress. She had cameo appearances in the movies "At First Sight" (1999), "Anything Else" (2003), "De-Lovely" (2004), and "Public Enemies" (2009).
