Gibson Amphitheatre (officially named The Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Citywalk) is located in Universal City, California, a largely unincorporated part of LA County that is completely surrounded by the City of Los Angeles and home of Universal Studios. It was opened as Universal Amphitheatre and took its present name on April 4, 2005, after Gibson Guitar Corp., Universal Studios Partnerships and House of Blues Entertainment, Inc. partnered together for a naming rights and theatre upgrade deal. Originally built as an outdoor amphitheatre in 1972, it was revamped and turned into an indoor theatre in 1982. It is host to concerts, awards shows, comedy, variety shows and other entertainment. It is known for superb acoustics and strategic location of the stage so that every seat in the house has a perfect view. Many talented artists have performed on the stage at Gibson Amphitheatre including Frank Sinatra, Pearl Jam, Ozzy Ozbourne, Muse, Linda Ronstadt, Judas Priest, Eric Clapton, Lil Wayne, Jeff Dunham, Cheech and Chong, Chris Brown, Backstreet Boys, Deftones, Celtic Woman, Smashing Pumpkins, Zac Brown Band, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rush, Glee and many more. The Academy of Country Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards and Teen Choice Awards are regular tenants to the venue. Even Pope John Paul II has blessed the theatre with his appearance there! Gibson Amphitheatre has two main levels for seating a total capacity of approximately 6,100 seats. It is the third largest indoor theatre (behind the Nokia Theatre and Shrine Auditorium) and second largest amphitheatre (only behind the Shrine Auditorium) in California.
