George "Buddy" Guy is an American blues and rock music guitarist and singer. He is considered by critics as the most heralded bluesman of his generation, and an important proponent of Chicago blues. He was born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, in 1936. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. His first studio project was released with Junior Wells band in 1965, "Hoodoo Man Blues." The release turned into one of the greatest blues albums ever made. Since then he has released 69 albums. The artist released collaborations with musicians as Joss Stone, George Edward Smith, B. B. King, Junior Wells, Otis Spann, Julian Clifford Mance (Jr.), Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Koko Taylor, and others. Guy has won six Grammy Awards both for his work on his electric and acoustic guitars. His latest studio album, "Living Proof" (2010), won the 2010 Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Blues Album." The release peaked at number 46 on the US Billboard album chart. Throughout the years he has received numerous awards. In 2003 he was awarded the "National Medal of Arts," an award and title created by the United States Congress, in 1984, for the purpose of honoring artists and patrons of the arts. By 2004, Guy was the only artist who earned 23 W.C. Handy Awards, presented by the "Blues Foundation." He was the second artist honored with the Billboard magazine's The Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement. In 2005, Buddy Guy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2008 he was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
