Riley B. King is an American singer and guitarist, known simply as B.B. King. He was born in 1925 on a cotton plantation near Indianola, Mississippi. In his early life he sang in churches and had performances with small bands around West Memphis, Arkansas. B.B. King started his professional career in 1949, after signing a contract with the American record label "RPM Records." Since then, B.B. King has released 42 studio albums, 16 live albums and eight compilations. B.B. King continues to perform to this day and he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He received NARAS' Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987. B.B. King is known as the King of the Blues. He devoted his life to blues and is noted as giving the largest contribution in development of this genre. He is also one of the most influential guitarists of all times. Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles. He even has own trademark Gibson guitar since 1982. B.B. King's personal touches on his signature model include the fine-tuner tailpiece, the semi-hollow body with no sound holes and, of course, the name that has adorned his guitars throughout his career "Lucille." The name came from an incident in the 1950s, where in a bar in Twist, Arkansas, two men got into a fight and accidentally set fire to the hall. Risking his life, B.B. King ran back into the collapsing building to retrieve his acoustic guitar. King later found out that the two men had been fighting over a woman named Lucille. He named his guitar after her to remind himself never to do something so crazy again.
