Merle Ronald Haggard is an American country music singer and musician. He is a legend and the one of the most important figures of the Bakersfield country scene. The Bakersfield sound is a genre of country music developed in the mid- to late 1950s, in and around Bakersfield, California, as a reaction to the slickly produced, string orchestra-laden Nashville sound. Merle Ronald Haggard was born in 1937 in Oildale, California. His music career started in the middle of 1960s. In 1964 Merle Haggard recorded a cover of Wynn Stewart's song "Sing a Sad Song." This single immediately became a hit and reached number 19 on Billboard's "Hot Country Songs." His first studio album, "Strangers," was released in 1965. The next year, Merle Haggard released the album "Swinging Doors," which became his real musical breakthrough. The single "Swinging Doors" peaked at number five on the charts and "The Bottle Let Me Down" climbed to number three. Throughout the years Haggard has released 49 studio albums, four gospel albums, three holiday albums, eight live albums, and 15 compilation albums. He has produced 38 number one hits and sold three million units of his box set collection, a soundtrack and two greatest hits albums. Merle Haggard has received numerous prestigious awards. He received 13 Academy of Country Music Awards, five Country Music Association Awards, and three Grammy Awards. He is the most nominated artist in the history of the Country Music Awards. In 1994 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2010 was inducted into Kennedy Center Honors for his contributions to American culture. He released "Working in Tennessee" in 2011 and it reached number 30 on US Billboard Top Country Albums.
