Known as Trey Songz, Tremaine "Trey" Aldon Neverson was born November 28, 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia. He is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actor. A military brat, Songz did not have aspirations for a music career as a child due to being shy. It wasn't until he was 14 that he recognized his vocal abilities and began performing with encouragement by friends and family. Record producer Troy Taylor discovered Songz during a talent show in 2000, which led him to a recording contract with Atlantic Records. After high school, Songz moved to New Jersey in 2002 to begin working on his debut album. While recording his first album, Songz released multiple mixtapes under the alias Prince of Virginia. One of the mixtapes featured an "answer track" to R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet," called "Open the Closet," and brought Trey some notoriety. His debut album, "I Gotta Make It" was released in 2005 and debuted at #20 on the Billboard 200. It has sold 300,000 records in the U.S., but has never been certified by the RIAA. Songz has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, an Ozone Award for Best R&B Artist, a Soul Train Award for Best Collaboration, and seven BET Awards winning one for Best Male R&B Artist in 2010.
